In this video, I talk about a vintage AC/DC voltmeter, specifically an electrodynamometer (aka "electrodynamic" or "dynamometer") type, made by the Weston Electrical Instrument Company of New Jersey in the early 1900's. This is a high accuracy 'laboratory' piece of equipment which is packaged to allow field use as well. It can measure voltages up to 600V, and does not 'care' whether the measured signal is DC (of either polarity) or AC; it naturally reads any of those types without requiring different terminals, or operator selections, or changes in test lead connections, and it does not need a rectifier. The only time when the user must move test leads between terminals is when changing between the voltage ranges. Here are the sections of this video according to their timeline position:
