West Virginia lawmakers are taking a closer look at Flock Safety cameras and automated license plate readers as questions grow over how the technology is used, who can access the data it collects and which statewide safeguards are needed.
During interim meetings Sunday, lawmakers heard presentations from Flock Safety and the Institute for Justice, a legal advocacy group that has challenged the use of automated license plate readers.
The discussion focused less on whether the cameras can help law enforcement and more on what happens to the information after a vehicle is captured — including how long that data is stored, who can search it, how it can be shared and what protections exist to prevent misuse.
Sunday’s meeting did not produce a final proposal, but the discussion made clear that the issue is likely to return when lawmakers reconvene.
