In this video, we highlight a legendary moment from 1947 when Everett Case, a former Indiana high school basketball coach turned NC State head coach, climbed a ladder to cut down the net after winning the Southern Conference Championship. While this moment is often credited as the beginning of the net-cutting tradition in college basketball, it actually traces back to Indiana high schools in the 1920s and ’30s—where Case had already made it a ritual after four state titles.
What started as a unique celebration has now become a timeless tradition in basketball championships around the world, including the NCAA tournament.
