Zoo bird keepers Chris and Devon recently spent an action-packed day carrying out health checks on takahē living in pest-free Tawharanui Open Sanctuary Society Incorporated.
As our video shows, this mahi during Takahē Awareness Month included the exciting task of checking a young chick – a precious new addition to the population of this endangered manu.
They were joined by Auckland Council’s senior ranger Open Sanctuaries, Matt Maitland who manages this special park that is currently home to two pairs of adult takahē.
Health checks typically involve a full physical check of each bird, taking blood samples, giving vaccinations and banding for identification.
We love assisting our partners at the Department of Conservation Conservation’s Takahē Recovery Group, with the management of the North Island metapopulation of takahē.
