The U.S. military’s famed 509th Composite Group that dropped the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, in August 1945 toward the end of World War II performed their flight training at the old Wendover Air Force Base on the border of Utah and northeastern Nevada. The top secret training was led by then-Colonel Paul Tibbets Jr., pilot of the Enola Gay aircraft that dropped the “Little Boy” bomb on Hiroshima on Aug. 6, 1945.
