Back in 1831, the Weller brothers established a whaling station in Otakou, New Zealand. They provided supplies and support to the whalers who plied their trade just offshore. The sailors always looked forward to visits from the "Wellermen" as they brought rum and other supplies. The song was first published in the 1970's.
