Culture in the Digital Era is a (hybrid) track within the Culture Studies master’s programme at the Department of Culture Studies at Tilburg University, the Netherlands. In this MA track, students explore how culture, society, and everyday life are shaped by digitalization, mediatization, and shifting boundaries between public and private spheres.
The courses focus on analysing how digital technologies, platforms, and algorithms influence cultural expression, communication, identity, and creativity, while encouraging students to reflect on their broader social and societal implications. Key themes in the programme include the convergence of public and private spheres, intermediality and transmediality, participatory art and gaming practices, the Anthropocene and emerging responsibilities toward the planet, and urgent media-related issues such as migration and sustainability.
In addition to theoretical knowledge, the track also pays attention to gaining practical skills. Students learn how to communicate academic insights effectively in professional and public contexts, particularly through contributions to Diggit Magazine.
