The largest bat in the New World, the spectral vampire bat, despite its name, is no blood sucker. This big bat needs large prey to satisfy its appetite. Its victims include birds, rodents and even other bats. Like the real vampire bat, the spectral vampire often stalks prey on the ground, and is so agile it can chase down mice while crawling on its winged "hands." Once a victim is caught, sharp fangs and powerful jaws finish the job. They are Listed as Near Threatened They Lived in the Forests in southern Mexico and northern South America They eat Birds, rodents, other bats and large insects And they're Lifespan is Up to 20 years
Unlike the majority of bat species, it is monogamous. Colonies consist of an adult male and female and their offspring. The adult male will bring food back to the roost to provision the adult female and their offspring. Colonies generally roost in tree hollows, though individuals may roost in caves. Due to habitat destruction and its low population density, it is listed as a near-threatened species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
Contrary to its latin name, the spectral bat does not feed on blood. This activity has been observed in Vampire bats (Desmodontinae).
