It's time for Āwheo's biweekly weigh-in at the Northern Royal Albatross nest in New Zealand!
On July 22, rangers from New Zealand's Department of Conservation (DOC) carefully corralled the chick and recorded a weight of 22 pounds (10 kg). According to DOC, the average weight for a 181-day-old chick is 22.7 pounds (10.3 kg), so Āwheo is slightly below average but still well within a healthy range. The chick has continued to receive plenty of food, with four feedings from its parents in the past week.
The next weigh-in is scheduled for August 4. Over the coming weeks, Āwheo will naturally begin losing weight as fledging approaches. This is a normal part of an albatross chick's development. Keep watching LIVE at AllAboutBirds.org/Albatross
