On trash day in my 55+ community of 3000 apartments, I look for the stories people leave behind.
This video starts from my apartment balcony on February 11th, looking out over a community of nearly 3,000 apartment units. On trash day, I like to ride around and see what’s been put out — sometimes to sell, sometimes for raw materials, sometimes to give away, and sometimes just to enjoy or learn from.
But what I really enjoy finding are the stories. Every now and then, something shows up that makes you stop and wonder who owned it, why they bought it, or why it ended up at the curb. It doesn’t happen often, but when it does, those moments make some of my favorite videos.
I treat trash day a lot like fishing or metal detecting — or just being nosy on a cool morning while listening to music. After the introduction, the video becomes a relaxed ride with a long classical music piece playing in the background. Each time I come across a dump site, I turn on the camera, talk about anything interesting or amusing, then move on to the next spot.
Some finds are funny, some are puzzling, some are surprisingly well-made pieces of furniture or solid wood, and some are just everyday items that still say something about the people who owned them. One item even came with a manual — and even after reading it, I still couldn’t quite tell what they were selling.
I didn’t take anything home this time, but the goal isn’t always to score something — it’s to enjoy the ride, the surprises, and the stories along the way.
This is part of my ongoing Weekly Trash & Treasure series. I’ve been making videos like this — and many other kinds — for nearly 19 years. It’s a variety channel, and you never really know what you’re going to find next.
