This video was produced when the laboratory operated as the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). The laboratory is now the National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR). With a rotor diameter of 284 meters and a hub height of 170 meters, the new 22-megawatt (MW) reference wind turbine provides the wind energy community with open access to the future of offshore wind turbine technology. The reference turbine features realistic and common reference systems designed for investigating not only the technological challenges of such large machines but also whether existing numerical modeling tools and design practices are suitable for the next generation of fixed-bottom and floating offshore wind turbines.

The turbine was developed cooperatively between research teams at DTU Wind and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) through the International Energy Agency Wind Technology Collaboration Programme Task 55, along with support from industry and research collaborators.

Learn more about the 22-MW reference wind turbine during this introductory webinar featuring experts from DTU Wind, NREL, and DNV.

Find more information about the turbine in this recently released report: iea-wind.org/task55/task-55-publications/.
