Experience the first full-color images and data from NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope in a brand new way. NASA’s Webb Telescope uncovered two views of the Southern Ring Nebula, one in near-infrared light and one in mid-infrared light. The colors in the images were mapped to pitches of sound — frequencies of light converted directly to frequencies of sound — in a data sonification.
This video only includes sounds from the mid-infrared view. Mid-infrared light is represented by lower notes overall to reflect that mid-infrared includes longer wavelengths of light. There are two stars in the center of this planetary nebula. Listeners will hear a low note just before a higher note, which denotes that two stars were detected in mid-infrared light. The lower note represents the redder star that created this nebula, and the second is the star that appears brighter and larger.
Sonifications support blind and low-vision listeners first, but are designed to be captivating to anyone who tunes in. This sonification, which scans the images from left to right, was adapted to a video to allow sighted viewers to watch as a vertical line moves across the frame.
The sonification does not represent sounds recorded in space. Two musicians mapped the telescope’s data to sound, carefully composing music that represents near- and mid-infrared light, specifically to hear their contrasts. In a way, this sonification is like modern dance or an abstract painting – it converts two of Webb’s images into a new medium to engage and inspire listeners. ![Lets take a break together and reflect
The universe never wastes anything, its kind of like a cosmic recycler. All your atoms and molecules were created inside a previous generation of stars. The life cycle of star allows for new beginnings. So, even if you step into a new chapter, your old life hasnt been wasted. It helps you shine even brighter 💫
Rho Ophiuchi, seen here, is the closest-star-forming region to Earth. Webb spotted around 50 young stars, many close in mass to our star, giving us a glimpse into the early life of the Sun. Dark, dense dust cocoons still-forming protostars, while an emerging stellar newborn (top center) shoots out two huge jets of molecular hydrogen.
Webb’s ability to capture the universe in high-resolution, from early distant galaxies to the solar system we call home, is allowing us to better understand our own origins.

00:00-00:20 : The video begins with a slow zoom into the Rho Ophiuchi Cloud Complex. This is a region of gas, dust, and white/blue stars covering the screen. The top half of the screen showcases purple and pink gas and dust, whereas the bottom half shows light tan and orange gas and dust. White text fades onto the screen reading Feeling stuck?/Lets escape into the universe together. The video zooms further into the purple/pink clouds while text reads We are going to take three deep breaths together/Follow my lead.
00:20-01:12 : A four-colored circle (pink, dark purple, light tan, and burnt orange) appears on the screen. In the middle of the circle is white text counting to four. In the first four seconds, the circle grows, almost looking like the circle is breathing. White glow text appears above the circle that reads Inhale. In next four seconds, the text reads Hold. The next four seconds have the circle decreasing in size slightly and the text reads Exhale. The text reads Hold for the next four seconds. This pattern happens another two times, then fading out. During this pattern, the image sweeps into the red/orange colored jet stream and zooms into light tan gas and dust.
01:12- 02:05 : The camera pans over the light tan gas and dust to showcase a white star with six points extending the reach of the screen. It then pans back to the pink/purple gas and dust to showcase another jet stream, colored a deep red. The video zooms out to showcase the entire image. During this exploration of the image, white text fades onto the screen reading The Rho Ophiuchi cloud complex is filled with gas and dust from generations and generations of stars/Without this gas and dust, beautiful new stars wouldnt be able to form in this stellar nursery/Your old life was needed to help you flourish into the person you are today/So, just like the stars, even the darkness has a purpose…/…to help you shine brighter. The text fades away and four seconds later the image fades to black.
