We thought we had the perfect plan: camp at Indiana Dunes State Park, hop on the train, and spend the day exploring Chicago.
How hard could it be?
Well… we're the Confers. 😂
Our trip starts with a Harvest Host stop in Fort Wayne, Indiana, a construction-zone detour, a campground parking warning within FIVE minutes of arriving, and a water hookup adventure.
Then we meet up with some of our favorite RV friends before heading to Indiana Dunes for the real adventure.
The plan was simple: take the South Shore Line into Chicago.
But a freight train derailment the day before completely changed the route. Suddenly, our easy train ride became a train → bus → train adventure just to get into the city.
Once we finally made it to Chicago, though, we made the most of it! We sampled Chicago hot dogs, explored the city, took an architecture boat tour, enjoyed some cocktails, had Chicago deep-dish pizza, and visited the iconic Bean.
And then… we had to get home.
Let's just say the return trip didn't exactly go according to plan either. 😂
If you're staying at Indiana Dunes State Park and thinking about taking the train into Chicago, this video will give you a pretty good idea of what the trip can look like… although hopefully your train ride goes a LOT smoother than ours!
