This is Union Pacific's Big Boy No. 4014, the world's largest operating steam locomotive. Built in 1941, it stretches an incredible 133 feet long and weighs 1.2 million pounds. Originally, 25 Big Boys were built, but only eight remain today—and this is the only one still in operation.
This year, Big Boy is embarking on a historic coast-to-coast tour to celebrate America's 250th anniversary. Along the way, it will make whistle stops in communities across the country before returning home to Cheyenne, Wyoming. Rosalie and I woke up early this morning and are hoping to catch Big Boy during its whistle stop in Springfield, Illinois. Come join us as we attempt to catch one of the most legendary trains ever built. Let's go!
