Many of us are horrified over the holidays as our families serve a ham or roast. We know where this “meat” comes from, and it’s far from humane. Why don’t our families just “get it”?
The reality is that people are moved, not by facts and reasons, but stories and emotions. And this is why stories like Lauri’s are so important. She was a baby pig, trapped in a crate and sick with a lethal infection. Her mom was stuck behind bars, just inches away from her, and unable to help. She was destined to die.
But Lauri was saved. We rushed her to an emergency vet, which diagnosed pneumonia and a staph infection. Years later, she is a happy pig, playing at a sanctuary.
It took extraordinary effort by our team to give her that life. The reality is that, so long as millions of Americans support the abuses of animal agriculture, families like Lauri’s will be broken. Mothers will be forced to watch as their babies slowly die. Nothing could be so cruel to do to a family on the holidays.
That has to change. If your families are celebrating over a holiday ham, share with them Lauri’s story – and ask them to join you in making a meal that everyone (including the animals) can truly celebrate.
