They are finally back! After Meta took away our ability to use custom environments in v79 to force-push the new loft layout, an incredible developer named XAstroBoy has entirely saved the day.
In today’s tutorial, I’m walking you through how to use the brand new, open-source Quest Home Editor app. This project doesn't just let us cook and flash new environments onto Horizon OS 2.6; it actually lets you import your favorite classic custom APKs from back in the day (like my beloved OG Minecraft Village environment) and converts them to the new system layout! Even better, thanks to its smart nav-mesh generation, you can now physically move around, walk up stairs, climb on furniture, and even place custom interaction spots like chairs—features we never even had in the past!
I’ll walk you through everything step-by-step: setting up your developer mode, setting up ADB Platform Tools across Windows or Arch Linux, dragging your APKs, fixing the common "fallback environment" bug via a hidden Horizon OS shell command, and playtesting your custom creations.
Note: This works flawlessly on Horizon OS 2.6 across Quest 3, Quest 2, and Quest Pro, but make sure to back up your default layout just in case futures updates break the workaround!
