I have insane guilt about this cowering mom we found at Ridglan in 2017. The mamas at Ridglan had mutilated vocal cords and shaky voices. Their legs were even shakier. A lifetime in a cage left this mama hobbling in her tiny world of metal and wire.
But we left her behind. We didn't have the hands or resources to take her on that night.
We hoped the government would act. This was all illegal, and I begged and pleaded with anyone who would listen—state, federal, even the vet board in Wisconsin—to help this mama. But they all ignored me. Even worse, the state decided in 2021–four years later—to charge ME with crimes. They never even investigated our complaint.
How things have turned. But not just for the beagles at Ridglan but for the entire movement. I blogged today about this, but the movement is at a turning point. The media, institutions, even criminal enforcement—all are changing at a rapid pace.
But key to all of us has been... you. People like you heard me when the authorities would not. You boosted this mama's story 1000-fold and because of that, it's possible that she's one of the 2000 Ridglan beagles who are now free.
That may be a fool's dream. It's likely she already passed. The life of a lab beagle is short and brutal. And 9 years is an eternity.
But you all still gave me hope, gave this mama hope. For that, I'm grateful.
Now let's go save all the rest.
