Ancient olive press discovered at Jabal al-Lawz, the real Mount Sinai in Saudi Arabia. Physical evidence of a year-long Israelite encampment.
During a recent expedition to Jabal al-Lawz in northwestern Saudi Arabia, our team found something carved into the bedrock just behind the Moses Altar: an ancient olive and wine press.
The Torah required olive oil and wine every single day the Tabernacle stood. Oil for the lamps, the grain offerings, the anointing of the priests (Exodus 27:20, Leviticus 2, Exodus 30). Wine poured out with every daily burnt offering, twice a day per Exodus 29:40.
Before any additional sacrifices, the baseline alone required three liters of wine consumed in worship every single day.
A year-long encampment with those daily requirements is not a campsite. It is a settlement. And settlements need infrastructure.
This press matches a three-part design documented at pressing installations across the ancient Levant, some dating back 5,000 years: a crushing surface, connecting channels, and collection basins. It has not been formally excavated or dated. We present it as physical evidence consistent with a long-term encampment at this mountain, not as proof in itself.
