What started as a normal day servicing our manure trucks quickly turned into something bigger. We’re changing oil, checking beater bearings, and dealing with dead batteries when we realize we’ve got a serious issue in one of our potato cellars.

Inside the old A-frame cellar, about 20,000 sacks of potatoes are starting to sprout. Because this is our seed cellar, we can’t sprout-inhibit them — and with no buyers or processors willing to take them, we’re left with one tough decision. If we don’t act soon, they’ll grow together and cause major damage to the cellar floor and ventilation system.

That means scooping them out, loading dump trucks, and hauling them back to the field to be spread later as fertilizer. It’s not what we want to do, but sometimes farming is about making the best call before a small problem becomes a big one.

We also deal with:
Servicing multiple manure spreader trucks
Checking beater bearings and chains
Dead batteries and installing battery shut-offs
Tight shop space and winter maintenance challenges

This is real farm work — the good, the bad, and the decisions you don’t see from the outside. Thanks for watching, and we’ll see you in the next one.
