through nasty clay and hardpan to reach the portal of a historic lode gold mine.
The wall rock is andesite — and the yellowish alteration zone tells a very specific
story. Propylitic alteration. Hydrothermal fluids. Electrum — gold and silver alloy
locked inside this mountain since the 1890s.
