Kauai is famous for its dramatic cliffs, lush mountains, rugged coastline, and scenery that seems to change around every corner. But because the road does not continue all the way around the island, just how much of Kauai can you experience in one day?
We rented a Jeep and set out to find out. Our plan was to drive as far as the road would take us in one direction, turn around, and try to reach the opposite end before the day was over.
Along the way, we explored the island’s changing landscapes, passed through small towns, checked out a few bakeries, and discovered places that made us want to stop and take a closer look. From the rugged scenery of western Kauai to the greener, more tropical side of the island, this drive continued to surprise us.
After leaving Kauai, we returned to Oahu for one final coastal drive before flying back to Iowa and returning to van life.
