Iβve been dreaming of this trip for over two and a half years. On March 24, 1863, Captain James R. Vanderpool of Company C, First Arkansas Infantry, under Colonel James M. Johnson, was ordered to lead a scouting mission into Newton County, Arkansas. During the mission, they encountered a significant Confederate presence and were forced to retreat to the Union post at Fayetteville, leaving several men behind in Newton County. All were eventually captured. At some point, one of the captives managed to get hold of a knife, and a few men escaped after cutting themselves free. However, David Flood, James Smith, and Berry Stone were not so fortunate. They were captured again and sentenced to hang.
