Dr. Whitney N. McCoy Hudson receives the Samuel DuBois Cook Society Staff Award at Duke University, honoring her leadership in community-engaged STEM education and educational equity.

In this short speech, Dr. McCoy Hudson reflects on belonging, community partnership, and the power of education to expand opportunity. As a research scientist at Duke’s Center for Child & Family Policy and a former K–12 teacher, her work bridges rigorous scholarship with transformative, multigenerational engagement (most notably through the InventSTEM Institute), which brings together Duke students, Durham caregivers, and children in joyful engineering exploration.

The Cook Awards celebrate individuals whose service, leadership, and commitment to social justice carry forward the legacy of Samuel DuBois Cook.
