So we had a choice: wait for a Tesla Robotaxi… or test Waymo in the middle of an Austin monsoon. Guess which one we picked?

This ride was not your average autonomous cruise. Lightning? Check. Flooding? Yep. A parking lot sprint that would make a Navy SEAL second-guess his life choices? Absolutely.

Watch as we:

- Got soaked trying to board the car Waymo almost brought to the curb
- Wonder out loud whether LIDAR does anything in a storm
- Ride through flash floods while EDM blasts a track called Tsunami
- Experience phantom braking, hazard-light hesitation, and a questionable drop-off location
- And give Waymo some reluctant credit… because somehow, we still made it

This is real-world testing. No polish. No corporate B-roll. Just two soaked guys, a robot driver, and Austin’s version of a carwash from the sky.

Timestamps:

00:00 – Getting into Waymo during a downpour
01:00 – First stop: flooded parking lot chaos
02:30 – Comparing Tesla’s shutdown with Waymo’s risk
03:45 – LIDAR talk: did it help at all?
05:00 – Waymo keeps pulling over as the rain intensifies
06:15 – Flash flooding, standing water, and cautious progress
07:20 – Another stop, another splash
08:00 – Best driving maneuver of the ride
09:00 – EDM kicks in: Waymo’s playlist meets the moment
10:00 – Water dodging and shaky lane switching
11:45 – The hazards-that-weren’t and double-Waymo showdown
13:00 – Final thoughts: credit where it’s due
14:30 – Drop-off drama in a thunderstorm
15:15 – Post-ride river crossing and soaking wet wrap-up

Would you get in a Waymo in this kind of weather? Let us know what you'd do differently.
