New Rideshare Safety Laws in Colorado? What You Need to Know
Colorado lawmakers are once again taking a hard look at rideshare safety — and this time, the stakes are high. After a similar bill was vetoed last year, a new proposal is moving forward that could significantly change how companies like Uber and Lyft operate across the state.

What’s in the bill?
The proposed legislation would introduce stricter safety requirements for rideshare companies, including:
Background checks on drivers every 6 months
A ban on drivers with convictions for assault, harassment, or domestic violence
Stronger measures to prevent “imposter drivers” using someone else’s account
Optional audio and video recording during rides
New rules like requiring sealed food/drinks and limiting rides for passengers under 15
There are also penalties — companies could face fines up to $1,500 per violation if they fail to comply.
Why now?
This push comes after multiple high-profile cases, including a survivor story shared by a Colorado lawmaker and a criminal case involving a fake rideshare driver who targeted vulnerable passengers. These incidents have raised serious concerns about trust and safety in the rideshare system.
The bigger picture
Supporters say these rules are common-sense protections — similar to regulations already in place for taxis and airlines. Critics and companies, however, have raised concerns about how feasible some of these changes are to implement.
Uber has indicated it’s willing to work with lawmakers this time around, suggesting the bill could have a better chance of becoming law.
