Human activities can affect the health of an entire watershed. Some harmful human activities (such as runoff from agriculture, urbanization, deforestation, and water diversions) can cause pollution, erosion, and low-oxygen zones. However, other beneficial human activities (such as sustainable farming, green infrastructure, reforestation, and water conservation) can protect water quality and ecosystems. The Chesapeake Bay shows how actions upstream can have far-reaching effects downstream.
