A how to video for painting negative space around trees using watercolor.
In this video I will show you how to use the negative space when painting with watercolors and how to most easily paint a forest of birch trees with this technique. ย In art,ย negative spaceย is the space around and between the subject of the image. The positive space is the subject or object of the image.
The whole technique of negative painting is very simple, and is based on the idea that painting is not based on an object but its background. You can paint this background, fill it with texture or shadows. These elements are applied around the object. Then the focus is on the area outside of the shape, rather than on the inside. Hope that with this tutorial you will get some new negative space art ideas :)
For this painting I used 100% cotton watercolor paper 240gsm, masking fluid and watercolors.
