Water hardness is determined with a complex of commercially available chemicals. Calmagite is added to a water sample giving a red complex with Mg and Ca ions. Adding EDTA solution to the sample the much stable MgEDTS complex is formed which free the calmagite which turns blue whan is not complexed with this earth alkaline salts.
