Did the Bible Describe the Water Cycle Before Science?
Amos 9:6 declares, “He that calleth for the waters of the sea, and poureth them out upon the face of the earth—the Lord is his name.”
At first glance, it sounds poetic. But look closer, and it appears to describe something remarkably specific: the hydrological cycle.
Centuries later, in 350 BC, Aristotle proposed that water from the earth is lifted into the air as vapor, condensed by cold, and returned to the ground as rain. While this idea is often credited to early natural philosophy, Scripture had already described the same process long before.
The book of Job states, “He maketh small the drops of water: they pour down rain according to the vapor thereof; which the clouds do drop and distill upon man abundantly.”
Aristotle sought explanations rooted entirely in nature, but Scripture points beyond the process to its Designer. Once again, the Bible not only speaks with scientific insight—it gives glory to the One who established the system in the first place.
