In the CBS Vice Presidential Debate Tuesday, Ohio Sen. Vance named one of the major causes of the United States’s high rates of gun violence as our “mental health crisis.”
“We unfortunately have a mental health crisis in this country that I really do think that we need to get to the root causes of because I don't think it's the whole reason why we have such a bad gun violence problem, but I do think it's a big piece of it.”
Vance added that gun violence in urban areas is to blame and must be solved through strengthened law enforcement.
The senator also expressed his condolences to Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz's son, who had witnessed a shooting.
With just more than a month to go before Election Day, Vance and Walz met for their first and only vice presidential debate on Oct. 1, hosted by CBS in New York.
