Welcome to Part 2 of our breakdown of the probable cause hearing for Cleda Renee and Elbert Dewayne Murray. In this segment, the defense begins the cross-examination of Campbell County Sheriff's Dept. Lt. JJ Hatmaker.

The Chain of Custody Issue:
It appears Captain Wasson takes possession of Renee’s wallet right there in the lobby. However, Hatmaker testifies that a corrections officer magically "discovered" Schedule III medication inside that wallet later down in booking. Under Tennessee law, a person must "knowingly and with unlawful intent take" contraband into a facility to be charged with introducing it. If Captain Wasson carried her wallet into the jail, that felony "Introduction of Contraband" charge has massive chain of custody problems.
The 5th Amendment & Evidence Tampering:
When officers aggressively questioned Renee, she stood her ground and refused to answer. Exercising your 5th Amendment right against self-incrimination is a constitutional right, not a crime. To make matters worse, they kept her phone and allegedly destroyed the charging port—a huge red flag that conveniently blocks the defense from easily downloading exculpatory data and timestamps.
