I left the water out overnight in 8F weather. Because it cooled slowly in a smooth glass bottle the water became supercooled and did not freeze (it was well below the freezing point of water). When I dropped a small piece of ice in it provided a nucleation site for the freezing to begin.

You can do this with water bottles as well.
