Jaylen Fleer, a former San Diego sheriff’s deputy pleaded guilty to 20 felony and misdemeanor charges involving acts with an underage girl. Jalen Fleer received a 12-year prison sentence. Jaylen Devon Fleer, 27, formerly a member of the county sheriff’s jail and court-services unit, was arrested following an investigation that revealed he had engaged in acts with a 14-year-old girl. He also had contacted numerous other underage girls over social media with aims of meeting up.
The case involved four victims between the ages of 12 and 14, but prosecutors allege Fleer contacted more than 40 others who described themselves as minors. The Deputy District Attorney said Fleer sought out young girls, offered them money in order to coax them into meeting with him, and encouraged the girls to arrange for their young friends to meet him.
John Oliver on police interrogations: ‘If they have decided you are guilty, you’re in big trouble’. The modern practice of police interrogations in the US developed after a 1936 supreme court ruling outlawing physical coercion. The most popular now is the Reid Technique, which has “influenced nearly every aspect of modern police interrogations”, according to a 2013 New Yorker investigation. “The Reid Technique has become one of those things that just culturally comes with being a cop,” Oliver explained. “You know, like their fondness for donuts...”

Elizabeth Holmes is an American former businesswoman who was the founder and chief executive of Theranos, a now-defunct health technology company. Theranos soared in valuation after the company claimed to have revolutionized blood testing by developing testing methods that could use surprisingly small volumes of blood, such as from a fingerprick. By 2015, Forbes had named Holmes the youngest and wealthiest self-made female billionaire in America on the basis of a $9-billion valuation of her company.[3] The next year, following revelations of potential fraud about Theranoss claims, Forbes revised its estimate of Holmess net worth to zero,[4] and Fortune had named her one of the worlds most disappointing leaders.
The decline of Theranos began in 2015, when a series of journalistic and regulatory investigations revealed doubts about the companys technology claims and whether Holmes had misled investors and the government. In 2018, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission charged Theranos and Holmes with deceiving investors by massive fraud through false or exaggerated claims about the accuracy of the companys blood-testing technology; Holmes settled the charges by paying a $500,000 fine, returning 18.9 million shares to the company, relinquishing her voting control of Theranos, and being barred from serving as an officer or director of a public company for ten years.
Holmess career, the rise and dissolution of her company, and the subsequent fallout are the subject of a book, Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup, by The Wall Street Journal reporter John Carreyrou, and an HBO documentary feature film, The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley.
