This video addresses two very common faults which can cause a watch to gain hours every day. The first cause can be magnetisation. To resolve this the watch will need to be de-magnetised and for this we use a de-magnetiser.

The two in the video are an Etic 340.400 (Chinese clone) and an Elma AntiMag.

The second cause of a watch going this fast can be that the hairspring is bound up by a contaminant such as old oil. To illustrate this, I introduce oil to the hairspring (which would normally have to be spotlessly clean) and you will see the reading on the timing machine.

The remedy for this is to clean the balance with a de-greaser such as Horolode or lighter fluid (be careful - these products are highly flammable). And this resolves the problem. But if the hairspring is contaminated it is recommended that the whole watch should be cleaned as a precaution.
