A miracle every time! Today Amelia had three sweet fluffy white kids! Super easy birth, just 2-3 pushes for each! The last one came out back legs first no problem! They all look like mama!
Since it was a beautiful day we let them out while she passed her placenta and Chris cleaned up her stall. After a mama kids we give her hot water with molasses in it and some grain. We also dip the kids’ umbilical cords in iodine to prevent navel ill and dry them up. They will eat their placenta if it is left, but we try to wait for it to fall so we can dispose of it. They can choke on it and as vegetarians, it can also mess with their stomach, turning them off grain and hay which can slow milk production.
The first kid is a boy called Neddick named for Cape Neddick, Maine. The second born is a doe, who is mostly white, we called her NorE for Nor’easter storms! The third kid is also a doe and we named her Narra, short for Narraguagus River & Bay! Can’t wait for you all to meet them! Yoga this Thursday at 5:30 if you need a snuggle before open farm hours on Saturday!
