THE REASON WHY I DON'T RECOMMEND ATTEMPTING THIS* (*unless you have the proper experience to do so!) is because you can create a LOT of water damage in a VERY short period of time if you don't know what you're doing! If the shutoff valves on the house-side of your washing machine's connection to your water supply are old and don't shut the water off properly, disconnecting the water lines can quickly become a plumbing EMERGENCY.
Long story short, if you think you're going to save money by doing this instead of hiring a professional, you may wind up spending more money trying to DIY than if you had just called the pros to begin with. If you DO attempt this, make sure you educate yourself on all the proper safety precautions FIRST!
