Deep in the Ozarks, a washed-out trail tested everything—my rig, my brakes, and my resolve. This wasn’t just any overlanding trip. This was a birthday request from my son: an adventure, not a party. He asked for a fishing pole—and we hit the trail.
Mikles Road (a.k.a. 1424), freshly reshaped by the Forest Service, is a narrow, rocky descent just east of Johnson Point. Once an easy route, it’s now gouged with trenches, slick with clay, and unpredictable with every rain. We dropped in from the northwest—the hard way—and the trail made sure we earned every inch.
Along the way:
• Soft brakes and steep drops
• Waterfalls calling from the valley
• Rain rolling in and mud deepening
• A kid practicing with his new fishing pole—and reminding me what really matters
At the bottom? One of the most scenic campsites in the Ozarks. Getting there wasn’t easy—but it was worth every obstacle.

This is the Ozark camping sweet spot. Low temps and high vibes. New friends and old trails. If youre familiar with the channel here’s your heads up: This one ain’t a history lesson. No caves or Piney ghosts. Just a couple of hairier than average hillbillies making YouTubes in the sticks. If that sounds like something you want to watch, A. There’s probably something wrong with you, and B. Enjoy this scenic snippet of Arkansas Overlanding.
Going southeast from Fayetteville means you likely enter the national forest in one of two places. Just passed Combs headed towards White Rock or the Pig Trail. Those are my primary access points which means I get to travel a handful of the same county roads before I hit the trails. It’s one of those small things I never would’ve considered to be something I enjoy the way that I do. But getting to see these areas frequently means you really notice the changes. The entire ROYGBIV color spectrum comes to life over just a month or two. Passing storms leave downed trees and branches. The locals and explorers eventually clear and line the roads with the debris. It’s all very familiar, cyclical, yet somehow new.
Eventually it’s time to explore so I tend to check Gaia for a service road I’ve never taken but that still progresses towards the destination. You never know what you’ll find. When I’m not in a rush I like to get out and hike a little on either side of the road. There’s always something interesting to see. Finding my way to the ridge, up above all the rest, sending the drone up to capture this view, that’s my favorite. Well, maybe second to a water crossing.
I really appreciate you guys watching this! You didn’t hear many overland buzzwords in this one. The trails weren’t super sketch. The views weren’t insanely epic. No product or affiliate link was a must have game changer. I’m not asking for money or selling a route. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with any of that. Maybe one day I will be doing those things. But for now, I’m really loving the purity of what we’re building. If I’m selling anything, it’s inspiration priced at 10 to 20 minutes of your time.
