On March 30th my car was packed with gear to spend a couple nights in a remote area of southern Utah outside of the counties that recently issued do-not-visit orders. I thought “Surely I can be safely distanced on a solo adventure same as last week”.
On my way to work I saw the stay-at-home order issued for Utah's Wasatch County where I currently live. “It doesn’t even take affect until 7am April 1st. I’ll be on my way back home later that same day.”
During work I noticed various messages going around facebook to keep outdoor adventures local among other distancing precautions.
Then the latest Wild Utah podcast episode “Stay Home, Save Lives: Coronavirus in Southern Utah” reminded me of the time I got a flat tire on that remote road between Loa and Torrey a couple years ago. Remembering that generous Wayne county local who stopped to help me change that tire prompted me to cancel my plans in favor of solo day trips.
Even with extreme precautions, it isn’t worth the risk to remote communities.
