Towards the end of October, you might have recognized a proliferation of Protestant posts about the attempted reform movement of the 16th century, which sparked the beginning of the Protestant movement with their distinctive ways of understanding the church and other peculiar doctrines. This is because October 31 is generally recognized as the day that Martin Luther nailed his 95 debate Theses to the door of Wittenberg - commonly known as the event that began the series of events leading to the biggest schism known to all of Western Christendom. In these times, a question often looms in the background: was the Protestant revolution *actually necessary? As Catholics, we affirm the need for reform and renewal - especially in light of the egregious abuses present in the time leading up to the 16th-century rebellion. In fact, historically, we have taken a large amount of responsibility for the outcry and disenchantment with the Church due to these abuses - simony, absenteeism, pluralism, financial manipulation, hyperfocus on secular concerns, etc. It is further admitted by Christians on both sides of the Tiber that when abuses abound, there is an imminent need for correction. So, what's the problem, then? The issue is precisely this: though reform was needed, it is entirely suspect whether the needed reform was found in the Protestant movement because reform has always been enacted within the Church and not by separating oneself from it. In this video, I go over three reasons why the true Reformation movement happened in the Catholic Church and not the Protestant movement.
