Anachronism is the enemy of good theology.

When we try to interpret an ancient Hebrew text through the lens of a much later Roman culture, we are just projecting our modern debates onto the past. It is intellectually lazy to assume that two completely different civilizations shared the exact same cultural context just because it makes the text easier to swallow today.
