In this video, I explore how Marilyn Manson turned conflict into a career—and how decades of public feuds, chaotic tours, controversy, and legal battles shaped one of rock’s most divisive legacies.
Before Marilyn Manson became a household name, Brian Warner was a Florida music journalist who interviewed Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails. That connection helped change everything. Reznor signed Marilyn Manson to Nothing Records and played a major role in the making of Portrait of an American Family and the breakthrough album Antichrist Superstar. But the relationship between Manson and Reznor eventually collapsed, leading to years of public criticism, interviews, disputed accounts, and one of industrial rock’s most infamous fallouts.
I also examine Marilyn Manson’s turbulent history with Courtney Love and Hole on the disastrous 1999 Beautiful Monsters Tour. What was supposed to be one of the biggest alternative-rock tours of the decade fell apart after only nine shows, amid clashes over production costs, ticket sales, incompatible audiences, and escalating tension between Manson and Love. Manson continued without Hole under the Rock Is Dead banner.
Then there is Marilyn Manson’s confrontation with Rob Zombie during the 2012 Twins of Evil Tour. After Manson’s set was cut short in Chicago, he blamed Zombie and threatened to “kick his ass” onstage. Zombie fired back during his own performance, turning the co-headlining tour into a public war of words. The two ultimately reconciled and returned to the road together years later—but for a moment, it was one of the most entertaining blowups in modern hard rock.
This Marilyn Manson documentary also explores his conflicts with Billy Corgan, the fallout surrounding the 1999 Columbine media panic, the legal dispute connected to Jennifer Syme’s death, and the serious allegations publicly made by Evan Rachel Wood and other women in 2021. Manson denied the allegations. In 2022, he sued Wood for defamation; in November 2024, he agreed to drop the lawsuit and pay approximately $327,000 toward her legal fees.
For years, Marilyn Manson’s image was built around provocation: the villain, the shock rocker, the self-described Antichrist Superstar.
