Was Jesus Christ a conservative? That’s what the Christian Right believes. But who were the ones, back in his time, who opposed him most furiously? Conservatives. They opposed his attitudes toward the poor and the immigrant. They opposed his tolerance and his empathy. They turned him in to the Roman government for his failure to adhere to their conservative values. In the end, he was crucified–the punishment only conservatives endorse—capital punishment.
The Christian Right faces several struggles these days– feeling like outcasts even when they’re in the majority. Feeling like victims even when they are the aggressor. But the biggest struggle of all for the Christian Right is following the teachings of someone they agree with so little.
