~Backstory AU~
so the main character is Warren. In this story, when one of the teachers die, they go into this sort of Limbo world. Shrignold hasn't necessarily died before so he is kind of the therapist/ or teacher for them. So whenever a character dies, they get taken to this world where he helps the teachers be a better teacher or better version of themselves. If they aren't able to be helped, they go on and actually die. But if he can help, they can come back to life and get a second chance.
So Warren was killed and was taken back here. At first, he didn't want to be helped, thinking he was ok the way he was but learning through Shrignold that he was completely out of control and narcissistic. He is the teacher of friendship so he creates a deep friendship with him but learns that he will never see him again if he's good so he stalls and tries to stay with him as long as possible. This results in Shrignold basically getting "fired" and such. When I say fired, he's gonna get killed off for not being useful anymore. Due to the fact he has been so focused on Warren instead of helping everyone else. Shrignold had also made a deep friendship with Warren as well, the reason for him focusing on Warren more and building that friendship
