The NAACP's new "Out of Bounds" campaign is urging Black athletes to reconsider attending certain universities in Southern states as a form of political protest.
But this raises a serious question:
Why are adults asking children to solve problems that adults have failed to solve?
In this episode of The Publisher's Desk, Damon K. Jones examines the role of the NAACP and Congressional Black Caucus in promoting this strategy and asks whether Black political leadership has become more focused on symbolism than outcomes.
A high school athlete did not draw congressional maps.
A college recruit did not write election laws.
A student athlete did not create the political conditions being debated today.
Yet they are being asked to sacrifice opportunities that could change the future of their families.
