The ocean was a black void beneath them, stretching endlessly in every direction. Out here, miles from land, the water swallowed everything—light, sound, even the certainty of solid ground. The NOAA research vessel drifted in the night. The crew thought they were alone, just another expedition scanning the depths, gathering data, mapping the unseen world below. The first impact came without warning. A deep, shuddering blow against the hull that sent a tremor through the steel frame. The deck lurched, throwing bodies sideways. The air crackled with tension as the ship groaned in protest, like a warning had been issued—one they didn’t understand. Then came the sound.
