Welcome back all! Been a while since we had a stand alone time trial PB video. This one is exciting. I achieved my first 1:50 on this track on January 31, followed by this quick improvement after.
Wario's Gold Mine no glitch has undergone a revolution in the first few weeks of 2022 so far, perhaps the least expecting track to receive such rapid developments. It's probably been years since I bothered to try something new right in the development stages of things, and this has been really enjoyable to say the least.
I set a few World Records here more than 10 years ago, most notably accomplishing the first 1:51 for this category. This was far before the tunnel turnskip was utilized, among other optimizations like the drifting low jump at the end of the lap. I haven't grinded this track since August 2011, and felt largely out of touch with my old form and consistency from way back. I had no plans to give this a proper treatment for a bit (I always wanted to, but had other goals in mind way before this), but this has really rekindled the old joy I had for how time trials were for me long ago, on one of my favorite tracks.
I improved my time by close to 1 full second through some grinding over a 3 day period. I was really satisfied with my first sub 1:51 (a 1:50.985, which is what the ghost comparison is), but knew I had way more left here. Although this new PB is technically driven worse, it showcases the potential I have here when I can nail all the strategies and driving cleanly. Even watching this back when recording it gives me much reinforcement that I can become a top 10 competitor on this track again if I stick with this for a bit longer.
Lap 1 - 37.052
An overall weak lap. Most completed lap 1s I get into lap 2 are generally low 36.9 to high 36.9. Most of my time loss came from a wide entrance into the end-tunnel strat, with lower air compared to my previous PB and a subpar MT charge up the slope. My last turn was poor, which lost at least 20ms with a wide alignment into lap 2.
Lap 2 - 36.815
My only completed lap with both the beginning turnskip and the end-tunnel strat. As my lap 1 was bad with a poor alignment into lap 2, I decided to try the beginning turnskip. This proved to be successful and still saved some time despite a wide & poor double MT leading into it. The rest of the lap was riddled with gradual small time losses scattered throughout. A wide alignment and poor last turn cost more than 50ms into lap 3.
Lap 3 - 37.082
Honestly not the worst driven lap in the world, but lost more than 100ms with the outright wall hit before the turn skip. My knee jerk reaction was to reset feeling I lost too much time, but I wanted to complete the run for getting my aforementioned lap 2 and saving the pace. This area is tough as more than half the time my wheelie input doesn't come out when rechaining after the shroom before the realignment into the turnskip. This happened to a lesser extent lap 2 but this was far worse on this lap with the wall hit being the price with significant time lost. Again a wide last turn alignment cost more time, but having a subpar last turn versus my old PB still saved me nearly 50ms to improve.
My current best splits so far are 36.907, 36.895, 36.895. My only completed lap with the beginning turn skip is this lap 2 of 36.815. I already failed a handful of 36.8 openers with no beginning turnskip. I feel a better driven lap with the turnskip and end-tunnel strat on laps 2 and 3 I can pull a solid 36.6 on both laps.
My laps exponentially got better in my last session yesterday after hard-committing to charging the up-spiral MT at the end as fast as possible, releasing as early as possible and being way more risky on the last turn which instantly returned faster laps. The landscape for this track has forever changed, and it's honestly a lot of fun. I want to get back on WW Top 10 here after being off it for closer to 10 years now. I feel more encouraged to see out some goals and to actually time trial more myself this year. We'll see where things go. Thanks for watching.
