A note from Wario's designer, Fray: "Wario is the first fully de-cloned custom SSB64 character. He was originally cloned from Mario, and still shares some generic movement animations with Mario. Otherwise, all of his attacks, specials, and some movement animations are new and he is functionally a completely different character than Mario."
