The boss has adaptive HP scaling. I'm using Felarx with the random 2000% dmg increase ability. Either way it seems the adaptive HP the boss has doesn't work very well against occasional damage spikes. Whether that has to do with the shotgun, the 2000% dmg increase chance, or me not constantly firing idk.
