[Synopsis]
In this video, I use test IRST mode with the J-11A, and the Mig-23ML. Not all aircraft have IRST mode, the J-11, J-11A, Mig-23 series, Mig-29 series, Su-27 series, Su-30 series, F-8E Crusader, and the Euro Typhoon series have IRST mode.
IRST mode doesn't shoot radio waves, like your radar does. It tracks and locks on targets by detecting the heat signature of enemy aircraft. When you get this type of lock, the radar warning receiver of the enemy aircraft you are targeting will not be alerted.
To use it, you must turn on IRST mode then use air combat mode. This mode very useful when you are using IR or IRCCM missiles. You cannot use any radar guided missiles while in IRST mode, you cannot use SARH(Semi Active Radar Homing) or ARH(Active Radar Homing) missiles, because the lock isn't a radar lock. It is effective at 10 kilometers or less.
You can still get IR locks while using your pulse doppler radar, but this will alert the enemy aircraft. Your enemy will do something to counter it by using flares, chaffs, flying low, notching, or performing evasive maneuvers. If they aren't alerted by their RWR(Radar Warning Receiver) then his chances of getting hit will be much higher.
The type of missiles I like to use in IRST mode are R-23T, R-24T, or R-27T, because these missiles have longer ranges which will enable you to stealth kills for enemies who aren't paying attention. Those missiles are fast and have a pretty long range.
Using IRST in conjunction with a helmet mounted display will enable me to get a lock, and aim my IR or IRCCM missile ahead of the target. Conversely, if I used the IR seeker, I would have to point the nose of the aircraft at the target. The enemy aircraft can use his flares, but they are coming from behind. I can aim the missile ahead of the target which will make it more difficult for him to dodge it.
