Papunya, a remote Aboriginal community 250km northwest of Alice Springs, is widely celebrated as the birthplace of the Western Desert art movement and the home of the legendary Warumpi Band.
Between 1979 and 1990, Papunya’s writers, artists, Elders, and literacy workers produced hundreds of vibrant, beautifully illustrated books at the Papunya Literature Production Centre.
Our exhibition, 'Wangka Wakaṉutja: The Story of the Papunya Literature Production Centre', brings these rarely seen works to light. The landmark book of the same name is in bookstores now.
